A trio of Boxer & Gerson attorneys took a short trek to the Oakland Airport Hilton earlier this month to make a two-hour presentation on workers’ compensation to Local 3299 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
Local 3299 is the University of California’s largest employee union, representing more than 24,000 workers under the umbrella of AFSCME’s more than 1.6 million working and retired members nationwide.
This marked the fourth consecutive year that Boxer & Gerson attorneys were invited to make a major presentation to the union’s leadership group, the Member Action Team, at the union’s annual conference. Last year’s event was in Los Angeles, with the venue alternating between Southern and Northern California annually.
Maria Grasso, Deirdre Mochel and Amy Shen took to the lectern for different portions of the presentation. Sager presented an overview of workers’ compensation law and reviewed the complexities of injury evaluation by physicians in the workers’ comp system, among other matters. She was followed by Mochel’s discussion of the benefits available for injured workers. Shen concluded with remarks on death benefits, employer penalties and settlements.
Plentiful time was built in for questions and discussion among audience members and presenters.
“Unions are only as strong as their leadership teams, so it’s vital that team members learn as much as possible about workers’ comp so they can convey their knowledge to the rank-and-file and best advise them regarding workplace accidents and injuries,” said Sager. “We’re very pleased that Local 3299 has seen fit to host Boxer & Gerson attorneys four years in a row to help disseminate this critical information.”
Local 3299 represents workers on all 10 UC campuses, five medical centers, numerous clinics and research laboratories, along with workers from the Hastings College of the Law.
